The first nuclear power plant installed in Brittany, the Brennilis power plant, is a major technological and regulatory challenge in the dismantling domain. Seres Technologies updated the safety report to allow the launch of works under optimal safety conditions, helping to contain the risks associated with this complex, iconic project.

The challenges of safety in nuclear
Nuclear safety remains a key challenge that requires a delicate balance to be achieved between maximum safety and financial viability. As an expert in risk management and the design of complex systems, Seres Technologies undertakes to achieve this precious balance by ensuring rigorous protection against nuclear risks, while helping to optimise costs.
Adaptation to new standards, such as strengthening resistance to internal and external attacks (earthquakes, floods, etc.) and improving emergency cooling systems, is a major challenge for maintaining and continuously strengthening the level of safety at our nuclear installations, particularly within the context of an ageing fleet.
The Seres Technologies’ expertise in the nuclear industry
Seres Technologies works in all areas of Nuclear Safety for BNI- and SBNI-classified installations, in particular in the following domains:
- Deterministic safety: Analyses and the compiling of safety documents for facilities and the ASNR and ASND authorities: safety benchmarking, dimensioning, risk analysis, aggression risks, change requests, authorisation process, document updating of general operating rules (RGE), technical operating specifications (STE), incidental and accidental conduct (CIA), safety ranking, etc.
- Probabilistic safety: Probabilistic Safety Assessments: PSA level 1, PSA level 2, EDI, reliability data, system functional analyses and fault tree modelling, OHF, etc.
- Major accidents: Accident scenarios and modelling studies
- Periodic re-examination: Management and steering, compliance, re-evaluation, ANSR relations, BNI and IANID orders.
- Radiation protection: ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) methodology. Radiological preparation and monitoring. Scientific calculation and simulation performance: calculation of dose flow rate at workstations and on transport packaging.
- Crisis management.

Example of a project carried out by Seres Technologies in nuclear safety

Calogena (SMR)
Drawing on its experience and expertise in the nuclear industry, Seres Technologies is supporting Calogena with the design of its new-generation SMR, more specifically across the SPD (Summary Preliminary Design), DPD (Detailed Preliminary Design) and execution phases.
For this, Seres Technologies has drawn on its historical expertise in risk management and complex systems engineering. The Seres Technologies teams are working on the management of the digital template, the design and mechanical dimensioning of the components, the thermal and thermodynamic study, and estimation of electricity consumption in the event of autarky (power cuts). Seres Technologies has also made major contributions to the drafting of the DOS (Safety Options Files), which has required expertise in nuclear safety, operational safety and OHF.

FAQs
What is nuclear safety and why is it important ?
Nuclear safety encompasses all technical, organisational and human measures implemented to prevent accidents at nuclear installations, and limit their consequences in the event of a breach. It aims to maintain the safety of installations, the protection of personnel and the protection of environments faced with risks related to the use of nuclear energy.
What services does Seres Technologies offer in the nuclear safety sphere?
Seres Technologies offers a comprehensive range of services dedicated to nuclear safety, including probabilistic safety studies to assess risks, systems reliability analyses, functional analyses to optimise performance, as well as environmental impact assessments to ensure regulatory compliance. These services make it possible to oversee the safety and sustainability of nuclear facilities, to meet the specific needs of each project.
